Al Wilson, President

Al Wilson completed a Bachelor of Arts in Biology at Drew University with a minor in Computer Science and Master of Science in Human Cytogenetics from Hofstra University, then began working for the Division of Oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1991, where he created a freezer repository and database of rare cancer specimens and make it available for international research.    In 1994, Al became the sole IT person for the Divisions of Oncology and Hematology, supporting the requirements of 200 doctors, nurses and office staff.   In 1997, he joined the newly centralized Hospital IT department in various technical lead capacities, including a hospital wide time and attendance program which completely eliminated paper in the institution and an inpatient Electronic Health Record.

In 2004, Al was the initial CHOP Information Security Architect, which had the security process responsibilities of creating policies regarding HIPAA as well as designing secure systems.  Al earned the Certified Information Security Professional (CISSP) designation from ISC2 in 2007 (# 92741) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) designation from ISACA in 2012 (#509473).  Currently, Al’s title is Supervisor of Security Engineering, where is he is responsible for managing an Operations staff that is primarily responsible for investigations, security monitoring, vulnerability management and the definition of security requirements for projects.  The CHOP Security Operations team manages several technical products, including eDiscovery, forensic software, and the Security Incident and Event Monitoring (SIEM).   In 2012, the eDiscovery project for which he was the lead won the Information Security Executive of the Year Award (ISE) North America Health Care category.

Al has been a member of InfraGard for several years, and has contributed previously by serving in the role of an organizer and facilitator for HIPAA discussions at the annual InfraGard training day and as a Governor.
